Why Do Comedians Lie About their Liberal Bias?

Colbert, Fallon, Fey and Michaels can't fess up about partisan yuks

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

― George Orwell, ‘1984’

We’ve seen plenty of press gaslighting in recent years. Remember the “cheap fake” charade meant to cover President Joe Biden’s tragic mental decline?

That lie mattered. Others are less consequential, but they need to be called out, too. Consider how progressive comics can’t tell the truth about their work.

Comedians like Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon and Lorne Michaels push an overtly progressive agenda with their work. It’s obvious to anyone with a passing knowledge of the political scene.

It’s undeniable.

Yet those four veteran stars insist their work, or that of their signature projects, hits both sides of the political aisle.

Colbert recently told The New York Times that late-night TV today is just calling balls and strikes, period. Michaels has repeatedly claimed that his “Saturday Night Live” creation doesn’t take political sides.

Fallon, while admittedly softer in its liberal bias, denies his show’s writers bend the nightly monologue in \ one direction.

And Fey had Michaels’ back in a recent interview, saying “SNL” just goes where the funny is, politically speaking.

Now, consider if any of the four have hammered these topics on their respective platforms:

  • Biden’s cognitive decline
  • Rep. Eric Swalwell’s sexual assault allegations
  • Hunter Biden laptop scandal
  • Graham Platner’s Nazi tattoo
  • The death of the Russian collusion hoax

No? Then they’re lying to us. But why?

It’s the same reason Legacy Media outlets refuse to put party labels on the aforementioned stars. It’s purposeful and meant to extend their cultural reach.

If Sean Hannity of Fox News fame slams President Donald Trump’s stance on a given topic, that’s news. Hannity is a committed conservative, so seeing him excoriate his own party is newsworthy, to say the least. And you can bet Hannity with either be referenced as a “conservative” or Fox News pundit.

As it should be. That’s who he is, and the reader should know where he stands.

Yet those labels rarely, if ever, trail progressive stars. When was the last time a Jimmy Kimmel news story called him a progressive comedian? Has it ever happened in a Legacy Media outlet?

If not, why not?

And when a Fey, Colbert or Michaels tells a reporter that they’re just shootin’ straight with their gags, why doesn’t said scribe set them straight or challenge them? Instead, the pliant press is more than happy to amplify their lies.

Why? They need to keep the charade intact.

That also explains why some very smart people, and folks like Fey, Colbert and Michaels are no dummies, pretend their shows will speak Truth to Power as needed.

They need to keep the charade intact.

It gives them more cultural clout and a better chance to change hearts and/or minds. And that’s the whole point, ultimately.

Now, conservatives will see through the lie a mile away. So will many independents and center-Left souls. Others, though, may not give the matter much attention.

For them, it’s a reassuring notion that their favorite comedians are just telling it like it is. And that’s exactly what these comics are counting on.

  1. It’s not only comedians. Doesn’t matter if they’re talking about politicians, newspapers, influencers, think tanks, or activist groups, mainstream media tag them as “right-wing” if they’re at all right-coded, and “far-right” if they’re staunch conservatives.

How many times do you see “rightwing think tank” or “far-right activist” or “conservative newspaper” in mainstream media? How many times do you see the equivalent tags for left-wing people and organizations? Almost never. They simply get quoted as “[name of newspaper]”, “immigration policy think tank”, or “anti-racism activist”.

I really enjoy the way Christian’s articles DO use the “far-left” and “left” tags on people and organizations who would have long ago been branded with labels if they’d been biased the same way towards the right. A little island of fair play.

  2. The irony is, they would get more laughs making fun of the left instead but they would end up cancelled for it.

  3. How can they be biased? They are way to smart to be biased – the dirty deplorables just haven’t figured it out yet ~

  4. Why should they acknowledge it?? Everyone knows they are propagandists but none will admit it. That’s how it works.

  5. These media hosts are simply doing as they’re told, they are owned by very powerful people, and those people are extremely liberal. Sadly, it appears that Democrats are openly communist and are quickly becoming the new Nazis.

  6. I worked in the newspaper industry for 20 years. With a few exceptions, all of my co-workers were strongly left of center. Yet most of them described themselves as “moderates.”
But when you discussed various issues with them, they always had opinions on those issues that were decidedly left wing.
But they genuinely perceived themselves as moderates. Why? Because when everyone you associate with all thinks the same way, those views seem mainstream and moderate. Anyone who doesn’t seems “extreme” or “far right.”
One of my favorite responses to such people was when I heard a conservative person tell them “you need to expand your social circles.”
